Barcelona, Spain Shore Excursions
Montserrat Half Day Tour (4 - 4.5 hours)
Take a 40-mile drive through the countryside to the Rack Railway train station.
Climb aboard the train for a 14-minute ride up the rugged Montserrat Mountain range. These mysterious peaks have been featured in many legends; in the Arthurian myth, this is the location of the Holy Grail.
Hike (approximately 70 steps on a 45° ramp) to the famous Montserrat Monastery that is perched on a ledge, hanging 2,400 feet above the River Llobregat. Founded as a Benedictine Abbey during the 11th century, it is now the location of the Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat, or "La Moreneta." This small Romanesque statue depicts the Virgin Mary with her child Jesus on her lap. Made of wood, this figure has turned black as the varnish has changed over time, giving her the name, "The Black Madonna." Guests, including children, wishing to visit churches must ensure that shoulders and knees remain covered. You can wear shorts that reach below the knee and tank tops, as long as you bring a sweater or scarf to wrap around your shoulders.
Trek through these cliffs on different paths from the Main Square during approximatly 60-minutes of free time. Note: Total distance walked is approximately 2 miles.
Rest at one of the snack bars or cafeterias and cash in your voucher for a beverage.
After approximately 2 hours of traversing the trails, proceed to the motor coach, which takes you back down the mountain and to your hotel or the airport.
