Wander the Piazza del Popolo and make your way inside the illustrious 11th-century church before viewing the "Crucifixion of St. Peter" by Caravaggio and "Assumption of the Virgin" by Carracci. Note: This tour includes approximately 1.5 miles of walking at a steady pace, part of which will be on cobblestones and uphill, including stairs. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Continue to the wondrous Chigi Chapel, one of five chapels located within the church, and gaze upon the hidden Altar of Science - representing the Element Earth - within Bernini's "Habakkuk and the Angel," as featured in Dan Brown's book. Marvel at Chigi Chapel's pyramid tomb and the skeleton cupermiento covering the subterranean crypt.
Drive to Vatican City, the seat of the Catholic Church, for a walking tour of St. Peter's Basilica, purported to be burial site of the apostle, Saint Peter. Upon your arrival, stroll through the vast expanse of St. Peter's Square, the meeting point where the Pope gives many of his blessings, and make your way to the second hidden Altar of Science - representing the Element Air: the West Ponente crest.
Then, journey inside the Michelangelo-designed St. Peter's Basilica and surrender to the larger-than-life architecture that includes Michelangelo's masterpiece, the Pietà.
After your 60-minute tour of St. Peter's Basilica and square, enjoy approximately 90 minutes of free time in the Vatican area, for shopping and lunch on your own.
Next, travel to the most Baroque church in Rome, the 17th-century Santa Maria Della Vittoria, and gaze upon the third hidden Altar of Science - representing the element Fire - in the magnificent Bernini statue, "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa."
Then, make your way to the "Temple of the Gods," the 2nd-century Pantheon, home to the tomb of the Renaissance painter, Raphael. While there, wander the immense circular hall, marvel at the 1,800-year old bronze doors and behold the Great Eye, the central opening in the roof and only source of light in the building. Then, wander the cobblestone streets and make your way to the home of the fourth and final hidden Altar of Science: the exquisite "Fountain of Four Rivers" - representing the element Water - amidst the picturesque Piazza Navona. Featuring a stadium-like layout, the 15th-century piazza was once the site of mock sea battles, public shows and Olympic-style games.
Finally, after all 4 Altars of Science have been discovered, travel to the secret place where the Illuminati held their secret meetings, Castel St. Angelo (outside visit only).
