Which Disney parks around the world have you visited: Disneyland, Anaheim
(1987), Walt Disney World (1993-present).
Date of first Disney Trip: September 1987.
# of Disney Trips: About 40 (as at Jan, 2001)
First Disney Attraction and reaction to it: Star Tours, at Disneyland; it had just opened a month or two earlier and we were totally blown away. If this was Disney, we were hooked for life!
Fav. Park and why: Sooooooo tough! Probably Magic Kingdom because it is, literally, the heart of the magic. It also has possibly the best all-round balance, especially for families (and we have two young kids).
Fav. Attraction and why: Even harder. Probably Pirates of the Caribbean; it was the one my future-wife and I rode most times at DL and, to me, it still encompasses the best all-round feel of ride with the kind of audio-animatronics Disney have made their own. It is the sort of attraction you would find nowhere else in the world (other than another Disney park :) )
Fav. Show and why: I'd have to declare a tie here between IllumiNations 2000 at Epcot and Festival of the Lion King at Animal Kingdom. Two out-and-out spectacular performances which you just could not imagine anyone improving upon.
Fav. Resort and why: Wilderness Lodge. The first time I walked in, the splendour of the lobby almost took my breath away, and I still think it is one of the most clevel and spectacular resorts. It really appeals to my sense of imagination.
Fav. Restaurant and why: I do love good, fresh fish, which is why, for me, the Flying Fish at The Boardwalk would just edge out Narcoosee's at The Grand Floridian.
Fav. Snack at WDW: Do hot-dogs count? I just love being in the US! :D
Fav. Disney Tip: Always arrive at the parks early and take advantage of the relatively low crowds for the first few hours. It makes such a difference to avoid the long lines for a while. And, if you are staying outside WDW, visit the parks the day AFTER their early opening days for lowest crowds.
Fav. Disney Magical Moment/ Most Memorable Experience: Watching the kids around any of the parades. The genuine fun and happiness in their faces is a true joy.
Words of Wisdom: I first started writing about Orlando in 1994, and it has now taken over my life to a large extent! The guidebook I write needs annual up-dating and several visits a year, hence I have chalked up a LOT of air miles in the last eight years or so. My researches first led me here to the DIS a few years back, and I firmly believe this is the best Internet resource around. It very much fits the profile of my book and the two together make an excellent fit, I think. We try to cover the whole of Orlando, not just the theme parks, and I honestly believe no-one else has such a detailed, all-round view. It obviously keeps me VERY busy (especially as it is not my main job) but I count it is a rare privilege to be able to write about such a fabulous range of attractions. In the book, I introduce readers to Orlando with the phrase, "Welcome to the most exciting place on earth, bar none, guaranteed." And I truly believe it is. Have a nice day!
