Although the ‘full musical’ treatment has proven to be a success for Disney’s recent live action reimagining of Beauty and the Beast, not every upcoming film will be taking that direction. Moviefone recently spoke with Niki Caro, the director set to tackle the live action adaptation of Mulan. Previous endeavors by Caro include Whalerider, Macfarland, USA, and the Zookeeper’s Wife. She explained the tone of the upcoming Mulan retelling.
“It’s a big, girly martial arts epic. It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving,” she said.
When asked about the movie’s musical presence she said, “Yes, from what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.”
The original 1998 film is centered around a young woman taking her father’s place in a military conscription instituted to combat a Hun invasion. It is likely that the production team does not think musical numbers will fit in with the tone of a martial arts and combat driven film.
