The D23 Expo, The Walt Disney Company’s fan fest for hardcore Disney enthusiasts, is set to take place beginning Friday, July 14 going through Sunday, July 16, 2017, at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The D23 Expo debuted back in 2009 and brings together widespread entertainment, merchandise, and the Disney theme parks portfolio; all under one roof. For those who don’t know, the fan club’s name is a nod to 1923, the year Walt Disney founded his company.
Tickets for Friday and Sunday are still available; however, the 3-day event ticket plus Saturday’s individual-day tickets are completely sold out.
High-level Disney executives are on this year’s agenda – including Bob Chapek, the Chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts, the Creative Head of Pixar, John Lasseter, and Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Animation and Family Entertainment, Cort Lane.
The actresses who gave the voices to several Disney princesses and female lead roles – Anika Noni Rose, The Princess and the Frog; Ming-Na Wen, Mulan; Susan Egan, Megara, Hercules; Auli‘i Cravalho, Moana; and Jodi Benson, The Little Mermaid – are said to be appearing this year.
In the past, the D23 Expo has featured plenty of stars and surprises too! In 2009 and 2015, Johnny Depp showed up dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean films. In 2011, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlet Johanson of Marvels’ Avengers made a surprise appearance. And, in 2013, Idina Menzel performed ‘Let it Go’ from Frozen.
Disney CEO Bob Iger will kick off the event with the Disney Legends Award Ceremony – Disney Legends are those individuals who have contributed in one way or another to the success of the company. Among those recognized this year are Oprah Winfrey, whose talk show spent 25 years on ABC; Stan Lee and his late partner, Jack Kirby, for helping create Marvel; Julie Taymor, an Emmy and Tony award-winning filmmaker known for adapting The Lion King to the stage; and Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher for their roles in the Star Wars franchise.
The much-awaited D23 app became available overnight in the app store, so those who are attending this year’s event might want to get that downloaded asap.
The DIS team will have a booth set up this year in the D23 Expo Emporium, so be sure to stop by and say hello!
