Disney donates $7 million to save forests

The Walt Disney Company has taken yet another step in their recent efforts to promote conservation. A $7 million donation was made to three different forest conservation projects aimed at decreasing carbon dioxide emissions.

$4 million of the total has been earmarked for Conservation International, which funds reforestation projects in the Congo and Peru. Conservation International is part of an international group called Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD). According to the New York Times, REDD "rewards countries that preserve forests with carbon credits that can then be sold for cash on the global carbon market."

The United Nations is holding a climate conference in Copenhagen in December, and REDD officials are hoping that the money from Disney will bring recogntion to the group.

The rest of the donation will be split between The Nature Conservancy and The Conservation Fund. $2 million will help fund a reforestation project in the Lower Mississippi Valley. The remaining $1 million will aid in sustainable forestry work in California.
