For the first time since opening in 1971, a restaurant at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom will serve alcohol. The new Be Our Guest restaurant in New Fantasyland will serve beer and wine in the evenings when the restaurant is full service.

The restaurant is based on the film "Beauty and the Beast," so the beverages have been chosen to complement the French-inspired dishes. Maribeth Bisienere, vice president of Food & Beverage and Merchandise for The Walt Disney Company, says the focus when creating the menus was storytelling. "Every detail is part of the story."

Walt Disney World Executive Chef Lenny DeGeorge says, "Our role is to finish the story."

According to the Disney Parks Blog, lunch will resemble a French bistro, but "dinner is a more elegant affair with dishes themed to the film: a whole roasted hen, a pork rack chop, pan-seared salmon with leek fondue and saffron potatoes. Gourmet cupcakes and mousse-filled cream puffs are finished tableside."

In keeping with the theme of the film, Stuart McGuire, Beverage Director, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said, "we wanted to offer wine that enhances the guest experience. The wines focus primarily on France's famous wine-growing regions, including Champagne, Alsace, Loire, Rhone, Burgandy and Bordeaux."

Kronenbourg 1664, the top French beer will be served, as well as beers from the neighboring region of Belgium.

Servers' costumes will fit into the theme as well, designed to resemble European fashion of the 1400s to 1600s. At lunch, they will wear a royal purple vest and shirt with knee-length knickers, and at night will add a ruffle at their throats.

The addition of alcohol at a Magic Kingdom restaurant has stirred up quite an Internet controversy. When Walt Disney planned his theme parks, he said that he did not want any alcohol sold in the Magic Kingdom, so that it would be a place where families could spend time together.

Be Our Guest opens for previews November 19 and will be fully open to the public December 6.
