Radio Disney to shut down stations and lay off employees

As of September 26, Radio Disney will only own one radio station in the United States - its flagship station KDIS-AM 1110 in Los Angeles. The other 23 stations across the country will be sold and 184 jobs will be cut from the stations, ad sales and operations. Radio Disney's national team will take over operations of the Los Angeles station, which will provide all content after the sale.

Disney says most consumers are getting their media digitally and only 18 percent of listeners listen to the radio broadcasts live.

Phil Guerini, Radio Disney's General Manager, said, "Radio Disney will be increasing investment in both digital distribution platforms and music-centric programming. These decisions will optimize Radio Disney for long-term growth and better reflect the habits of the consumers we serve - a national audience of kids and families."

To expand their digital presence, Radio Disney intends to continue its 12-year partnership with SiriusXM, and join up with ShowMobile, Slacker and Harman’s Aha Radio. They will also continue adding content to the Radio Disney app and the WATCH Disney Channel app.
