As the busy summer travel season starts, two airlines are cashing in by raising their baggage fees for trans-Atlantic flights. United Continental and Delta will still allow the first bag to be checked for free, but United Continental will now charge $70 for the second bag. Delta will charge $60 for the second bag if it is checked online and $75 if checked at the airport. Each airline used to charge $50 for the extra bag on the trans-Atlantic flights.
Delta is making a few other fee-related changes. A second checked bag on flights to Mexico and Central America is no longer free, and will cost customers $30. For domestic flights, there is no longer an incentive to pay baggage fees online, the costs will be the same as when you pay at the airport. Morgan Durant, Delta's spokesman, said that move is a "competitive response" and no other major airlines offer a discount to pay online.
