Verizon Wireless strikes exclusive deal with Disney

The Walt Disney Company and Verizon Wireless have formed a partnership which will give Verizon cellphone users the ability to access information while visiting Disney theme parks.

Starting in 2009, Verizon users will be able to find Disney characters, restaurants and available attractions while at either Disneyland or Disney World Resorts. The features will includes text messages from Disney characters and mobile games located at a Disney program accessible via the phone.

Jay Rasulo, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman stated "Imagine receiving up-to-the-minute tips on special park activities with just the touch of a button or receiving a call from Buzz Lightyear welcoming you to the Magic Kingdom."

Initially the services will be available through specific handsets but will expand to all existing Verizon customers. Both Disney and Verizon are planning to make basic park information, such as the times of the shows, accessible to all mobile phone users whether they use Verizon or not.

According to Jeffrey Nelson, Verizon Wireless spokesman, plans are in the works to give the phones the ability to manage attraction wait times. While the theme parks experience is the focus of this partnership, it is hoped that Verizon will get additional exclusive Disney content.

Nelson stated "Today's announcement is about the overall relationship between two companies, with a promise of solid consumer and traveler applications to come as we work together."

Neither Verizon or Disney disclosed the financial terms of this agreement.
