According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm is in discussions with director Rian Johnson to helm Episode VIII, the second film in the new Star Wars trilogy. Johnson is best known for directing the science-fiction time traveling movie Looper starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis as well as episodes of the AMC series Breaking Bad. The article claims Johnson will not only direct, but will also write Episode VIII. Famed director JJ Abrams is currently shooting Episode VII and will pass the torch to Johnson for the next episode, something not unheard of in the Star Wars universe. For example, George Lucas directed the original Star Wars in 1977 and Irvin Kershner directed the 1980 follow-up The Empire Strikes Back.

The report also claims Johnson will be involved in writing a "treatment" for Episode IX, which only seems natural since he will play such a large role in shaping the events of Episode VIII. Some online rumors suggested he would be writing and directing both Episodes VIII and IX, but as more details make their way into the public realm, it seems as if those rumors may have been a bit overzealous.

There has been no official announcement from Lucasfilm, Disney or StarWars.com.
