Disney's announcement of the closure of the online Virtual Magic Kingdom game on May 21 has generated a strong reaction among thousands of its players.
11,000 of the estimated 15,000 players have signed a petition asking Disney to reverse this decision. The game, which has a strong following among children, is also known for the friendships it has fostered. Parents are particularly incensed that their child will no longer be a part of the VMK community.
Katie Gerber, speaking on behalf of the Walt Disney Internet Group stated "VMK was created as an online promotion. It exceeded our expectations…to the point that we left it open much longer than originally anticipated. All good promotions must come to an end."
A website savevmktoday.com has been organized for fans wishing to take part in the growing protests to Disney's decision.
