According to Disney, this week's release of the computer-animated "Tangled" will be the last of its kind for the near future. The reason? According to a media expert cited in the Los Angeles Times, young girls are no longer interested in being princesses, "they're interested in being hot, in being cool. Clearly, they see this is what society values." Speaking on whether or not princess-centric movies will return to the studio at a later date, the article quotes Pixar Animation Studios chief Ed Catmull as saying, "They may come back later because someone has a fresh take on it...but we don't have any other musicals or fairy tales lined up."

The LA Times article provides a very thorough discussion of the reasons behind this move, including the underwhelming performance of Princess and the Frog and success of non-princess franchises "Wizards of Waverly Place" on the Disney Channel and "iCarly" on Nickelodeon.
