Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger just made some announcements that are sure to please Disney fans of all kinds. At a shareholders' meeting in Portland, Oregon, Iger confirmed some film sequels that had been speculated and solidified a very important production start date.
Officially, Iger announced the current development of both a third installment in the Cars
franchise as well as a sequel to 2004's The Incredibles
. While it was critically panned, Cars 2
was extremely successful not only at the box office, but also in the merchandise world. No specific dates were given for either film, but simply the acknowledgement of the films' early development is big news. The Incredibles
sequel will be written by the first film's director, Brad Bird, who recently directed Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
and is currently filming Tomorrowland
starring George Clooney.
One date that was confirmed (vaguely) is the beginning of filming for Star Wars: Episode VII
, set for release on December 18, 2015.
The film, already in pre-production, will begin filming in May
of this year. Iger also clarified that only one role has been officially cast for Episode VII
, despite many internet rumors (which may or may not turn out to be true). He stated, "Rumor has it that almost every actor in the world has been cast in this movie, but so far, the official cast member that we've confirmed, the only one, is R2D2. Played by R2D2." He did share the fact that the movie's events will take place 30 years after 1983's Return of the Jedi
