Disneyland set to open 'Dream Home'
by Leah ZanollaJun 16, 2008
Disneyland's much anticipated Innoventions Dream Home is set to open on June 17. This project was a collaboration of Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, Lifeware and builder Taylor Morrison and features the daily activities of the fictional Elias family.
The Dream Home is located on "360 Tomorrowland Way". As guests arrive, they are greeted by a member of the Elias family and are told that they are celebrating their son Robbie's earning a spot on the team heading to the International Soccer Championships in China.
The front yard features the ability to decorate the exterior of the house with a push of a button. As family members enter the home, they are "recognized" by sensors. As different members of the Elias family enter each room, the music and wall hangings change to their personal preference.
A feature of the Great Room is the "coffee table book". This is a touch screen which allows users to access library book selections. On view is "Alice in Wonderland's original manuscript. There is also a grand piano which allows access to a teacher who can provide lessons from a remote location.
The kitchen is loaded with gadgets including appliances that "talk" to each other. When a bag of flour is put on the counter, "Lillian" voice of the computer, gives recipe suggestions. If the needed ingredients are not in the home, a shopping list is automatically created.
The Dream Home dining table has embedded computer screens. When a cell phone is placed on the table, it instantly displays photos and videos which can be shared by other family members. A cabinet shows photos and artwork that corresponds to objects put on the shelf.
The Family Room has a 100 inch television and 7.1 surround sound system. When a movie is selected, the room darkens and the curtains automatically close. The adjacent home office has a desk and chair reminiscent of the ones used by Walt Disney in his studio. A feature of this room is the 3-D home printer.
The teenage daughter's room has a "Magic Mirror" which shows via projection what different outfits will look like on her and what accessories/hairstyles work best. Her younger brother Robbie's room features a pirate ship theme. When the story of Peter Pan is read, video appears on the wall and the sail of the ship. There's a cannon on the bed that can blast holes in virtual clouds and when Tinker Bell passes, certain objects in the room shake.
In the backyard, a monitor provides barbecue instructions and visitors can stop at the Party Tent and use some of the hands on applications found within the Dream Home.
