Test Track sponsorship future uncertain

GM, one of the world's largest car manufacturers, currently holds the sponsorship rights to Epcot's Test Track. Ten years ago, GM paid Disney $100 million to sponsor the popular ride. The deal is believed to have ended in March, but contract negotiations are still ongoing between GM and Disney. GM has announced that they are interested in remaining Test Track's sponsor, but the company filed for bankruptcy on June 1st. The sponsorship also includes spending between $1 million and $2 million per year to upkeep the showroom at the end of the ride. The federal government has loaned the car company billions of dollars and is set to take over majority ownership of the brand. One concern the public has is that GM's continued sponsorship of Test Track could be seen as the government paying for an amusement park ride with taxpayer dollars.

Rumors are that Disney is letting GM keep their contract on a short term basis while contract details are worked out. In this economy, it will be hard to find another company willing to sponsor and re-theme the attraction. Toyota and Honda spokesmen have said their companies are not interested.
