Georgia Gorilla heads to Animal Kingdom
Mar 25, 2008
Kashata, a 14 year old resident of Zoo Atlanta is heading to Disney's Animal Kingdom. Upon arrival she'll be joining a family of primates in the hopes of finding a mate.
Born at Zoo Atlanta in 1993, Kashata, a Western lowland gorilla, has never reproduced.
This project is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium's breeding program. This species of gorilla is considered "critically endangered". There are currently 362 Western lowland gorillas housed in AZA facilities. Eight are found at Disney's Animal Kingdom with twenty two at Zoo Atlanta.
Disney's Animal Kingdom spokesperson Andrea Finger stated "We are enthusiastically welcoming Kashata to our family group."
