New train being added to Disney World's Monorail system

by Leah Zanolla
Aug 12, 2011

This fall, Walt Disney World's Monorail system will have its full fleet of 12 trains for the first time since a deadly collision in 2009. A new train will begin testing in the next few weeks and will be added to the rotation in the coming months. While it will initially lack the signature colored stripe used to identify each train, it will eventually be given a peach-colored stripe.

Disney World's Monorail system has lacked its full number of trains since July 5th, 2009 when two trains collided, killing 21-year-old part-time Cast Member Austin Wuennenberg. A new train was added a few months later to replace one of the damaged trains.

Disney also recently announced that the trains would no longer run during Extra Magic Hours, giving maintenance crews more time to work on the trains and the track. Many skeptics believe that the move was actually meant to cut operational costs.
