Safety Concerns at Splash Mountain?

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, Disneyland has temporarily raised the height requirement for front seat riders on Splash Mountain to 60 inches. No other Disney attraction has a height requirement over 54 inches, so why the change? The article quotes MiceAge columnist David Michael, who claims that younger children tend to duck down during the final drop of the ride, and those sitting in the front have sustained injuries as a result.
A Disneyland spokesperson denied that any specific incident caused the temporary change in policy, noting that Disney wanted to "“evaluate options to improve comfort and safety,”
