Disney Magic pays hefty fee for canal crossing
by Leah ZanollaJun 12, 2008
Disney Cruise Line paid the Panama Canal Authority $283,400 for it's recent canal crossing. The Disney Magic was charged the fee for its voyage from Florida to Los Angeles.
There is increased competition for the 50 mile trek which allows passage from the Atlantic to Pacific oceans through a series of canals. This year the Panama Canal Authority reports that traffic has increased by a third. Ships are waiting up to six days for a time slot with three vessels recently paying a record $313,000 to make the voyage.
The Panama Canal is undergoing a $5.25 billion expansion which is slated to be completed in 2014.
