Has Central Florida tourism been 'blacklisted?'

by Leah Zanolla
Jul 26, 2009

As if the decrease in typical tourism to Central Florida isn't bad enough, local government officials have become worried that Orlando has been placed on an unofficial "black list" by some federal departments. According to a recent article in the Orlando Business Journal, three U.S. representatives from Central Florida have joined fellow politicians in "urging an investigation" into the possibility of such a list.

It's concerning that an area like Orlando whose economy is driven by tourism would be 'blacklisted' during a recession. The U.S. Travel Association took notice last year when companies who had received bailout funds were chastised for having meetings in tourism destinations like Orlando. In fairness, the article states that, "So far, no blacklists have been confirmed and the White House has said it would oppose such practices."
