OIA Traffic drops 10% in October
by Leah ZanollaDec 5, 2008
According to an article in the Orlando Business Journal, traffic at Orlando International Airport dropped a staggering 9.9% in October, making it one of the sharpest declines in traffic since September, 2001.
While the article attributes the decline to consumers pulling back on spending as a result of the slowing economy - another factor is the decreased number of flights coming into OIA. Many airlines scaled back service to Orlando earlier this fall in an effort to cut costs as a result of rising fuel prices this summer.
While the domestic news wasn't good, the same article sites internationals traffic as increasing by 10.5% over the same period. The increase in international traffic comes as many non-domestic carriers such as British Airways and AeroMexico have either started new service to Orlando, or increased the number of existing flights.
