On the heels of
yesterday's story regarding a drop in Orlando hotel occupancy, an article in the Orlando Business Journal reports spending declined in both travel and tourism during the first quarter of 2009. In that time, the number of tourists travelling through Orlando International Airport suffered a 12.8% fall, while those tourists that did visit the area spent 18.6% less on accommodations during their stays.
To add insult to injury, the drop in accommodation spending at Orange County hotels has also resulted in a $16.8 million loss in resort tax collection from October of 2008 to April of 2009. In addition, the recent extension of the booking window for Walt Disney World's
FREE Dining promotion may suggest bookings for this coming fall have not rebounded as well as Disney expected.
