A traditional Hawaiian ground breaking ceremony took place at Walt Disney's upcoming Ko Olina resort. The planned 21 acre, $800 million resort will feature 480 Disney Vacation Club units as well as 350 hotel rooms. Among the amenities will be a wedding lawn, waterway with tubes and slides, kids club, convention space, spa and saltwater snorkel lagoon.
The plans for a Hawaii resort were announced by Disney over a year ago before the economy began its downward spiral. Disney remains secure in this new destination's future, particularly among its Vacation Club members who consider Hawaii a top vacation pick.
During the symbolic ceremony, Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts stated "This Disney destination resort will provide a unique way for families to experience Hawaii. By blending Disney's high standard of guest service and creative storytelling, we'll create a place where all family members can discover the wonder of these special islands. We have long-term confidence in this location and in our product."
The Ko Olina resort's trademark waterway will feature rockwork and Caldera volcano with bodyslides and tubes as well as a kiddie pool area. The spa will encompass 18,000 square feet while 8,000 square feet will house the convention center. Two restaurants are planned, one with ocean views. There will be two 15 story towers with a lobby resembling a canoe house.
This project is expected to result in 1000 permanent Cast Member positions. Attilio Leonardi, president of the Kapolei Chamber of Commerce, stated "You can't ask for a better economic indicator than Disney breaking ground in your neighborhood. We couldn't have asked for a better stamp of approval than Disney making a decision to come here."
As part of the ceremony, the Walt Disney Company presented $100,000 to be divided among Campbell, Kapolei, Nanakuli and Waianae High Schools.
