Barenaked Ladies cancels SeaWorld concert due to animal rights issue
Dec 1, 2013
Musical group Barenaked Ladies has cancelled their upcoming performance at SeaWorld Orlando. The group had been scheduled to play February 15 at the Bands, Brew and BBQ event, but cancelled after 12,000 fans signed a petition against the concert. Canadian Mike Garrett started the petition because he was upset about animal rights and asked the rockers not to sing as a sign of their support.
After seeing the results of the petition and watching the controversial film Blackfish, the band agreed to cancel. They wrote on their Facebook page, "We've talked things over and decided not to play at SeaWorld at this time."
Garrett believes he has won this small victory. On his website, he wrote, "The world has changed and people are seeing places like SeaWorld and Marineland for what they truly are: 'abusement' parks that profit off the suffering of animals rather than the family destinations they make themselves out to be."
