Overview:
When Disney opened the Studios on May
1, 1989, Michael Eisner described it as "the Hollywood that never
was and always will be". Evidence of this is found as soon as you
approach the main gates, which are fashioned after the Los Angeles
Pan-Pacific Auditorium of 1935. The shops of Hollywood Boulevard and
Sunset Boulevard are replicas of well-known Hollywood architecture of
the 1930's and 1940's. The chrome Art Deco style of the Golden Age of
Hollywood is abundant here. Even the signature Earffel Tower is
representative of old Hollywood as each studio had a water tower on
their lots for heating, cooling and emergency uses.
Parts of the 135 acre park are working
studios for the television and motion picture industry. Guests can get
a behind the scenes look at how special effects are done and watch
animators at work on tours such as the Backstage Pass tour, Backlot
Studios tour and the Magic of Disney Animation. Entertaining stage
shows and productions such as "Beauty and the Beast",
"Voyage of the Little Mermaid", "The Hunchback of Notre
Dame" and "Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular" are
sure to thrill audiences.
Speaking of thrills, the Twilight Zone
Tower of Terror and Star Tours provide wild rides for those who dare
to try them. Take a nostalgic journey with some of Hollywood's favorite
films in the Great Movie Ride. The Studios' newest and most exciting
show is Fantasmic! Shown nightly, weather permitting, this spectacle
uses lasers, pyrotechnics, animation, live performers and water
screens to tell the story of Sorcerer Mickey and friends and the
battle against some of Disney's nastiest villains. The theatre holds
7000 people but be sure to get in line at least an hour and a half
before show time to get a good seat.
Dining at Disney-MGM Studios is an
entertaining experience as well. The Hollywood Brown Derby is a
replica of the real Brown Derby. At the 50's Prime Time Caf, be sure
to eat your vegetables or answer to "Mom". Sit in a
convertible to watch old sci-fi flicks as you eat at the Sci-Fi
Dine-In Theater. Counter service restaurants such as Rosie's
All-American Caf, Backlot Express, ABC Commissary, Toy Story Pizza
Planet and the Studio Catering Co., are found throughout the park in
addition to numerous snack locations.
