Wildfire Update:  The air quality has improved dramatically over the last few days in the Orlando area, with winds blowing much of the smoke from the wild fires towards the east. However, the fires still continue to burn and without a substantial storm system to help douse the flames, the problem is likely to continue.  Current Orlando weather is calling for some rain in the area on Thursday, but likely not enough to make a major impact.

For those planning to drive into Florida from other parts of the country, and if you're concerned about road closures and delays due to the wildfires, you can visit www.fl511.com - this website is maintained by the Florida Dept of Transportation and shows real time data on all road conditions and closures throughout the state.  Florida residents can simply dial 511 from their cellular phones to hear the same information.

Due to extended drought conditions throughout Florida, wildfires have been starting in the areas surrounding Orlando.  Currently, more than 3000 acres are either burning, or are threatened by these wildfires.  While the fires are not close to, or present a danger to the tourist areas in Orlando - the smoke from them is degrading the air quality in Orlando.  For the third consecutive day, the Orlando area had the worst air quality in the nation as a result of the smoke.  Currently, fires are being reported in Flagler, Lake, Volusia and Osceola counties (see below). While local firefighters are trying to contain the fires, without some significant rainfall, the situation is expected to continue and possibly worsen.  Currently, the five day forecast for Central Florida shows only a slight chance of precipitation.

The Department of Health has issued advisories for those with respiratory conditions that could be exacerbated by the smoke.  (See FLORIDA AIR QUALITY CONDITIONS).  Also, the Center for Disease Control has suggestions to help minimize health threats from wildfire smoke (CLICK HERE for the CDC recommendations)If you are currently planning to visit Central Florida in the next week, and have any members of your party suffering from any respiratory conditions, we ask that you be aware of this situation.  (WFTV Article on current conditions)
