Screenshots of the new Frozen short have been released. The seven-minute short will play before Disney’s live-action Cinderella, which will hit theaters March 13. The film’s original characters, including Princess Anna, Queen Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf, will be back, this time to celebrate Anna’s birthday.
Josh Gad, who voiced Olaf, said, “The gang is back together. And literally it’s like we never went away. Every day we’re reminded of Frozen in our lives. So it feels like a continuation of a saga that has many parts still untold. It felt like coming home again after a short absence.”
Co-director Chris Buck (Jennifer Lee is also back in the directing chair) says the short will allow Elsa to show how much she’s changed since the original film. Now that her secret is out, “it’s another side of Elsa the audience hasn’t seen before and we hadn’t really played with in the original feature.”
Elsa plans to throw a birthday party for Anna and gets a cold. Lee says, “Elsa doesn’t get a cold in the usual way. She’s special. Surprising things occur that wreak a little havoc.”
Other things to watch for: Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez have written a new song for the short. Olaf, Kristoff and Sven join the sisters for a “family” portrait. Changes have been made to the land of Arendelle with the warmer weather.
Gad sums up the short by saying, “We continue this story of these two sisters, who only had each other growing up together. They are still supporting each other. That’s what this is about.”
