Nov 10, 2014
Walt Disney Animation Studios' newest film, Big Hero 6 took top honors at the box office on its opening weekend. Big Hero 6 brought in $56.2 million, while Interstellar came in number two with $50 million.
Interstellar came out in IMAX on November 5 and earned $17 million by its wide release on Friday, November 7. Big Hero 6 opened November 7 as well, but fell short with $15.8 million that night. However, it quickly picked up momentum as families headed to the theater on Saturday. The film's viewers haven't just been all families though; the studio has found that it is appealing to all ages.
Dave Hollis, executive vice president of theatrical exhibition sales and distribution at Disney, said of the animated film, "It really is something that's as appealing for an older audience as it is for a younger audience. Audience demos that we dive in and look at are encouraging in that big portions of our audience are the not-a-parent range."
The rest of the top 5 films are Gone Girl with $6.1 million, Ouija with $6 million and St. Vincent with $5.7 million.
