Disney is offering a new customizable Star Wars merchandise experience for their guests. Although opening in conjunction with Star Wars Weekends, the Droid Factory will be a permanent fixture inside Tatooine Traders, the merchandise location near Star Tours at Hollywood Studios. At the Droid Factory, guests will be able to build their own R-series Astromech droid figures (like the popular R2D2 character). The 3 3/4-inch figures can be created from a choice of 71 parts, all available in multiple colors. In addition to the standard droid bodies, novelty Disney hats can be added, such as a variety of Mickey ear hats (a Goofy hat, pirate hat, fedora and Yoda hat will be introduced later this summer).

Product developer Cody Hampton says, "We began discussing the Droid Factory in 2009. We know that personalization is an important aspect of the popular build-you-own light saber experience. We felt the same thing could be done with action figures but on a much larger scale." In addition to creating their own droid, guests can use sticker sheets to name the figures when they are done. The price is $11.95 each; the double pack is $18.95 each.
