Disney can ban concealed weapons
Aug 17, 2008
According to Florida's Attorney General, Disney has the legal right to prohibit their employees from having firearms locked in their cars.
Disney has maintained this stance since the law, which allows Floridians with concealed weapon permits to have guns in their vehicles, went into effect on July 1. Disney has repeatedly stated that they are exempt due to having a permit for "explosive materials" which is required for their use of fireworks.
Disney did make one concession in allowing workers with permits to have weapons when they are on certain non-resort property owned by the company. This change is what prompted the Attorney General to uphold Disney's banning of firearms for the majority of their work sites.
Universal has taken a different tactic in prohibiting their employees from having concealed weapons on their property. Universal is claiming that their work-study program falls under the same exemption that Florida school's enjoy. The Florida Attorney General is considering if Universal can legally enforce their own ban under this provision of the law.
