SeaWorld Orlando to add several new attractions
Oct 10, 2011
A recent article in the Orlando Sentinel suggests SeaWorld Orlando has begun the process of a "major redevelopment" expected to end in 2012 or 2013. While details are currently limited, SeaWorld spokesperson Nick Gollattscheck did confirm such an expansion in saying, "We do have plans for incredible new attractions at SeaWorld Orlando, and we're committed to finding amazing new ways to immerse our guests and fans in the mysteries of the sea." Despite this vague statement from SeaWorld, the Sentinel's Jason Garcia found some hints among government documents and personal interviews with insiders. According to Garcia, the existing penguin exhibit would be transformed into an "Antarctica-themed ride." Park employees have allegedly been told "Penguin Encounter" will close in December of this year for an 18-month overhaul. An official even suggests the exhibit's building could be demolished entirely.
In addition, a circular theatre attraction revolving around sea-turtles could replace the Manatee Rescue. Garcia also claims SeaWorld's "boutique" park, Discovery Cove, could be receiving a "rainforest themed trail." With Universal Orlando's Wizarding World of Harry Potter enjoying immense success and Disney's Animal Kingdom recent announcement regarding the development of an "Avatar" themed land, SeaWorld is trying to keep pace.
