Charles Rogers, chairman of the board of directors of USO Central Florida said, “Most people, when they think of USO, they think of (singer and entertainer) Bob Hope. Or, they think of welcome centers at the airport.”

The airport used to have a USO Welcome Center, but it closed 15 years ago due to the closure of the Orlando Naval Training Center. The new Center is located on the Terminal A side near ground transportation.

The 3,1000-square-foot center will offer members of the military and their families a place to relax, with a gaming center, quiet room and play room for kids. Free food is available, in fridges stocked with microwavable meals, snacks, and soda.

The Central Florida theme parks were a part of the Center’s creation, with several sections donated and sponsored by Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando, and Walt Disney World. The play room, donated by SeaWorld, boasts coral reef and fish murals on the walls. The Orlando Sentinel reports: “Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin also donated to help cover the starting costs of close to $1 million, higher than the first-projected cost of $750,000.”

Rogers says most airport welcome centers are between 750 and 1,500 square feet, so Orlando’s is one of the largest. The soft opening began August 25 and there have already been 1,632 visitors to the space, which is open from 6:00am-10:00pm.
