Are you tired from running from Lightning Lane to Lightning Lane? Need a break from the Florida Sun? Craving some Magic Kingdom nostalgia? Have I got the attraction for you: the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover!
Let’s take a moment today to appreciate one of the best Walt Disney World attractions. The breezy, gentle ride around Tomorrowland, quickly popping into the dark and mysterious Space Mountain along with mini dioramas… and not to mention those Cinderella Castle views! You can almost always count on the PeopleMover to have a relatively low standby wait as the omnimover ride system keeps moving into tomorrow.
Everyone wins, as this attraction is made for all ages. It’s relaxing, shady and cool, offers unique views, and it lasts just long enough to properly rest your feet from all of those theme park steps. (Or… before disembarking, you could kindly ask the Cast Member at unload if you could ride again!)
No matter how many times you’ve experienced the PeopleMover, it feels different – yet comfortable – each time. Not to mention the fabulous kinetic energy the attraction adds to Tomorrowland! I mean, guys, is this… a perfect Disney attraction?
Did you know?
- The PeopleMover, officially known as the “Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover”, opened in 1975 and was initially part of the 1964 New York World’s Fair concept.
- The ride was designed by Walt Disney himself, reflecting his vision for transportation of the future.
- The PeopleMover uses linear induction motors (magnets) to propel itself around at a leisurely speed of about 7 miles per hour.
- The PeopleMover’s narration has changed over the years, and the current script includes references to attractions that are no longer there, such as If You Had Wings and The Timekeeper. While the original narrator was Jack Wagner, the current narrator is ORAC One, “The Commuter Computer”. And yes, the retro PeopleMover chime still plays throughout!
- As you pass through tunnels with various windows and scenes to take in, one includes a fantastic model of Walt’s Progress City. In fact, this is the original model for EPCOT: Walt’s Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. This model was previously housed in the upper level of Disneyland’s Carousel of Progress before being relocated to Walt Disney World.
Day or night, the PeopleMover never fails to give me the warm and fuzzy feelings of fond Magic Kingdom memories. Remember: “the PeopleMover is the perfect vehicle for people-watching. So keep your eyes peeled, you never know who you might see!”
