The Walt Disney Company is adding a brand-new position to its senior leadership team, and the person taking the job has quite a bit of experience in artificial intelligence and consumer technology.
Karandeep Anand will become Disney’s Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer on October 2, 2026. The newly created role puts Anand in charge of technology across the company, including infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product development, and engineering. He’ll report directly to Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro.
That’s a lot of corporate terminology, but there’s a reason Disney fans may want to pay attention to this particular executive hire.
Disney is putting more emphasis on creating a connected digital experience across its businesses, with Disney+ serving as what the company describes as the “digital centerpiece.” Anand’s job will include working across Disney’s different technology teams to modernize the systems and products the company uses and creates.
And his background makes the direction particularly interesting.
Disney Is Bringing in an AI Veteran
Anand most recently served as CEO of Character.AI, a platform built around conversational artificial intelligence. Before that, he was President and Chief Product Officer at financial technology company Brex and held leadership roles at Meta, including Vice President of Ads & Business Products at Facebook.
Earlier in his career, Anand spent 15 years at Microsoft, where he worked in product and engineering leadership and was part of the team that developed the Azure cloud computing platform.
Disney also says several members of Character.AI’s technical team are expected to join the company alongside Anand.
In announcing the hire, D’Amaro specifically pointed to Anand’s experience with infrastructure, consumer technology, and AI, saying Disney intends to use technology “in service of creativity.”
What Could This Mean for Disney Fans?
Disney hasn’t announced specific new products or features tied to Anand’s appointment, so this isn’t an announcement that Disney+ or the theme parks are suddenly getting some giant new AI system.
Still, the timing is worth watching.
We’ve already seen Disney exploring new ways to use technology to make its businesses more connected, including the AI-powered Walt Disney World vacation-planning tools the company is preparing to test. Disney’s technology reaches nearly every part of a vacation these days, from its websites and apps to resort reservations, Lightning Lane, mobile ordering, and the systems operating behind the scenes.
Then there’s Disney+, which D’Amaro has identified as central to the company’s efforts to build a more direct relationship with fans. Bringing someone with Anand’s background into a company-wide technology position suggests Disney wants more coordination between the many digital products that currently live under its enormous umbrella.
Exactly what that looks like for us remains to be seen. And considering how much technology is already involved in planning a Walt Disney World vacation, I’m particularly curious about whether the goal will ultimately be to simplify the experience or add even more layers to it.
For now, Anand officially starts his new role on October 2. We’ll be watching closely because this sounds like one of those behind-the-scenes Disney announcements that may become considerably more interesting once we start seeing what his team actually builds.
