That last day of a Walt Disney World vacation is always a little bittersweet. You’re not quite ready to leave, but there’s a suitcase waiting, a flight to catch, and the reality that your vacation is coming to an end. If your flight doesn’t depart until late afternoon or evening, though, there’s one question worth considering: Can you squeeze in one more Disney theme park visit before heading home?
A DISboards member recently asked that very question, and fellow Disney fans had plenty of suggestions. Some recommended getting up early and enjoying a few favorite attractions, while others preferred a leisurely breakfast or lunch. One member even shared a warning about an attraction that nearly caused them to miss their flight!
DISboards member nostalgic4disney is planning a January vacation and wanted advice about visiting a theme park before a flight departing between 5 and 7 p.m. The responses revealed some clever ways to enjoy those final vacation hours without spending the entire morning worrying about getting to the airport.
The Best Park Might Be the One Closest to Your Resort
One suggestion came up repeatedly throughout the discussion: Choose whichever theme park is easiest to reach from your Disney Resort hotel.
DISboards member NothingClever explained that their family typically visits a park within walking distance, such as EPCOT or Disney’s Hollywood Studios when staying at the Walt Disney World Swan or Dolphin. They return to the resort around noon, leaving time to relax before heading to the airport. Sometimes, they skip the parks and enjoy lunch at Disney Springs instead.
Member hardcorestitch offered similar advice:
“Don’t do it unless you’re within reasonable distance to your desired park.”

Several others agreed, pointing out that transportation delays can quickly turn a relaxing final morning into a stressful one.
Marthasor reminded everyone that unexpected problems can happen, whether it’s a delayed bus, an attraction breakdown, or an interruption to Disney Skyliner service.
It’s an excellent point. When you’re staying at an EPCOT-area resort, spending your last morning at EPCOT or Hollywood Studios makes sense. If you’re staying along the monorail, Magic Kingdom might be the easier option.
The less time you spend traveling between your resort and the parks, the more time you have to enjoy yourself.
Animal Kingdom Could Be a Great Departure-Day Choice
Several members recommended Disney’s Animal Kingdom, particularly because of its earlier opening hours on some days.
DISboards member AttheParks explained that their family often chooses Animal Kingdom when it opens at 7:30 a.m., giving them more time to enjoy the park before leaving.
Member tbre1982 shared that their family has spent their final vacation day at Animal Kingdom for the past two years.
They like getting an early start, enjoying attractions, and stopping for a late breakfast at Tusker House Restaurant.

They also shared a dining tip: Booking one of the latest breakfast reservations may allow guests to sample lunch offerings as the restaurant transitions between meals.
Of course, that depends on the restaurant’s operating schedule and when the buffet changes over, so it’s not something guests should count on.
Still, Animal Kingdom could be an appealing choice if you want a few hours of Disney magic before leaving. Just check the park’s opening time for your travel date.
Some Disney Fans Have a Favorite Way to Say Goodbye
For other members, choosing the last park isn’t just about convenience. It’s about tradition.
DISboards member scrappinginontario explained that their family likes to begin and end every Walt Disney World vacation at Magic Kingdom.
During a recent trip with an 8 p.m. departure, they visited EPCOT before hopping over to Magic Kingdom. They then returned to their resort, collected their luggage, and met their Mears transportation.
Member Sweettears also prefers Magic Kingdom on departure day, typically enjoying lunch at Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen before leaving. With a 7 p.m. flight, they feel there’s enough time to enjoy the park without rushing.
Meanwhile, EPCOT Terran enjoys a final stroll through EPCOT, often stopping at Via Napoli for lunch when flying home later in the day.
And glocon likes to begin and end trips at EPCOT, perhaps enjoying breakfast at Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie before visiting a few attractions and exploring World Showcase.
I can certainly understand wanting to spend those final vacation hours somewhere that feels special. There’s something about taking one last walk down Main Street, U.S.A., or around World Showcase before heading home.
One Attraction You Might Want to Avoid Before Your Flight
One of the more entertaining responses came from DISboards member 2vets, who regularly takes flights home around 6 p.m.
They usually choose whichever park is most convenient to their resort but offered one particularly memorable warning:
“One cautionary note: do NOT ride the peoplemover within 2 hours of needing to be back at your resort for departure!”
Naturally, the original poster wanted to know why.
According to 2vets, they’ve experienced multiple lengthy delays aboard the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover and Spaceship Earth. One PeopleMover delay lasted so long that they worried about missing their flight.
It’s a funny story, but it also highlights a legitimate concern.
Attractions can stop unexpectedly, and while most delays won’t threaten your travel plans, being stuck on a ride when you’re supposed to be heading to the airport is probably not how anyone wants to end a vacation.
That final morning might be a good time to enjoy attractions with shorter waits while leaving yourself plenty of extra time.

What About Transportation to the Airport?
The conversation also raised some important questions about how guests plan to get from the parks to the airport.
DISboards member Rory607 pointed out that guests visiting Magic Kingdom need to consider where they’ll meet their rideshare driver.
Unlike the other Walt Disney World theme parks, standard Uber and Lyft pickups for Magic Kingdom take place at the Transportation and Ticket Center rather than directly outside the park entrance.
Other members suggested walking to Disney’s Contemporary Resort or taking transportation to another nearby resort, although guests would still need to account for the extra travel time and appropriate pickup arrangements.
Member Sweettears prefers using Uber rather than relying heavily on Disney transportation on departure day.
However, Marthasor shared a different experience, explaining that they’ve also encountered lengthy waits for rideshare services.
The takeaway is simple: Don’t assume transportation will be immediate, regardless of which option you choose.
You’ll also need to consider whether you’re returning to your resort to collect luggage or traveling directly from the park to the airport.
And remember, a 5 p.m. flight doesn’t mean you have until 5 p.m. to enjoy the parks. You need to allow time for airport transportation, security, and boarding.
Or Maybe Skip the Parks Altogether?
Not everyone in the discussion thought squeezing in another park visit was the best idea.
DISboards member DWillowBay suggested saving a special character meal for departure morning instead.
Their family enjoys a leisurely brunch or early lunch, followed by a little time exploring the resort before leaving for the airport.
I love this idea, especially for families with younger children who might already be exhausted after several days of theme park touring.
Member Brian Noble takes an even more relaxed approach.
“Usually I remember to talk myself out of it.”
Rather than trying to fit in another park, they prefer sleeping in, packing without rushing, and enjoying brunch or lunch near their resort. Then it’s off to the airport with plenty of time to spare.
After a busy Walt Disney World vacation, that sounds pretty appealing, too.
Would You Spend Your Last Disney Day in a Theme Park?
After reading through the DISboards discussion, I think the biggest takeaway is that there’s no single right way to spend your departure day.
If you’re staying close to a theme park, have an evening flight, and don’t mind getting up early, a few extra hours at Disney could be a wonderful way to end your vacation.
But if you’re traveling with tired kids, have several bags to manage, or simply don’t want to worry about transportation delays, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a relaxed breakfast and heading to the airport.
Personally, I think the idea of visiting a nearby park for a few hours sounds great, provided there’s enough time built into the schedule. I’d rather leave wanting one more ride than spend my last morning worrying about whether I’ll make my flight.
What about you? Do you squeeze in one final theme park visit before flying home, or do you prefer a relaxing departure day?
