Live silhouette portraits are one of the oldest souvenirs of Disneyland. In fact, the original Portrait Studio location on Main Street opened one day after the park did in 1955. Silhouettes are an art form that gained popularity in the 18th century, reaching their peak in the 19th century. These intricate black-and-white creations capture the profile of a person or subject, and turn them into cherished keepsakes.
I’ve frequented Disney’s parks for years, and have somehow passed this opportunity many a time. But on a recent trip to Disneyland, I found myself perusing the Disneyana shop just past the train station, where some sample silhouettes caught my eye… including a pet portrait.
I hadn’t imagined this would be an option before! I always thought you’d need to be present for the portrait session, when, in fact, you can also provide photos of people (or pets!) of who you’d like a silhouette made of. Upon my discovery, I quickly joined the short queue to have my precious pet’s portrait done at Disneyland.
Portrait Silhouette Pricing:
- Standard cut silhouettes (people) are $11.99 each
- Premium cut silhouettes (pets; more details) are $14.99 each
- An oval frame featuring hidden Mickeys within the filigree are available for an additional $19.99.
Trust the Process
The talented artists actually cut the silhouettes freehand using a pair of scissors, working off the photo or live sitting session.
After searching through my photo library for that perfect shot of my fluffy boy, complete with his tongue sticking out, the incredibly-quick artist started snipping away. (In case you have trouble finding just the right photo in the moment, try looking through videos to screenshot an ideal side-profile.)
After just a few minutes, the silhouette was complete!
Upon payment, Cast Members then placed the completed silhouette into the frame I also purchased, before getting packaged back up into the frame’s box. I honestly can’t recommend this special Disneyland memory and unique keepsake enough!
So, next time you’re hunting for that perfect, special souvenir, consider having a silhouette made. Not only is it an affordable option compared to other Disney merchandise, but it’s a special way to remember your magical trip… or pet back home!
