I was traveling with a friend to the Disneyland Resort and we decided we wanted something a little different for breakfast. With its French-inspired menu, Red Rose Taverne in Disneyland Park’s Fantasyland fit that bill…at least on paper.
Mobile order was too far out and the line didn’t seem long, so we headed inside to order. Since we wanted to be able to try more things, we ended up ordering three entrees.
While perusing the app, we had talked about ordering the Gourmet Breakfast Sandwich [$11.49] with an herb blend and creme fraiche egg, maple butter spread, Muenster cheese and crispy bacon on a brioche-style bun. However, once in line, we discovered they were offering another sandwich which also sounded interesting.
We ended up with the Maple French Toast Sandwich [$13.29], Bonjour! Breakfast [$9.49], and Royal Chiffon Pancake [$9.49], plus coffee and water.
The sandwich was made with an egg patty, bacon, and Munster cheese served between two thick slices of French toast. It was served with Taverne Potato Bites (tots) and was meant to come with maple syrup (which it didn’t).
I have a feeling we chose the wrong sandwich. Since we were missing the syrup, we borrowed some from the pancake, but it didn’t really help. While the French toast appeared slightly burned, there wasn’t any burnt flavor to it. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much of any flavor to it at all. The egg patty was bland, the bacon was flavorless (I KNOW!), and I couldn’t really taste the cheese. The tots were the saving grace of the dish, but the side shouldn’t be the star.
My friend extended his Disneyland trip to be with family and returned to Red Rose Taverne later in the week to grab the Gourmet Breakfast Sandwich with slightly better results. If anything, the bacon looked much tastier.
The pancake was a classic Mickey pancake served with bacon or sausage. Without knowing any better, we wisely chose the sausage, which was very tasty. The pancake itself was a decent one and the guava-strawberry sauce it was served with was a nice addition.
Keep in mind that this was a single pancake, which might not be enough for some adults.
I’ve written before that sometimes the simplest meals are the best, and that is once again the case with the Bonjour! Breakfast. This was simple scrambled eggs, Taverne potato bites, bacon, and sausage. The scrambled eggs were actually done well, the tots were crispy as always, and we already discussed the delicious sausage. The only miss was the still flavorless bacon.
For the price, the standard breakfast is probably your best option, with the other things that sounded super fancy on paper ending up being a disappointment.
There is no kids’ menu at Red Rose Taverne, so breakfast could get a bit pricey for families if every child wants their own Mickey pancake (as they should). Adults should definitely stick with the Bonjour! Breakfast, just save me some tots.
My breakfast in the parks is usually a pastry and a soda, but do you have any suggestions for when I’m in the mood for something more hearty?
