Auli’i Cravalho has grown up with her Disney character, Moana. Cast as a teenager, this beautiful person has spent her formative years finding herself the same way her character has. In the countdown to the Moana 2 release next week, we loved watching this interview with Auli’i Cravalho and Disney Files Magazine Editor Ryan March, hearing her take on how the journey of Moana has such a widespread impact.
I’ll let Auli’i tell the story; however, there is one point raised in this video that struck a chord with me. Cravalho points out that this is the first time a Disney princess has been allowed the freedom to age. I stopped to think about this for a moment, thinking of all the Disney princess-related sequels I had seen, and I can’t remember a single one where a Disney princess had aged over time, even though their story had progressed. In the second movie, Moana will now be shown as a young woman and a big sister, no longer an ambitious teenager; she is portrayed as a confident Wayfinder, depicting all the beauty of being older, wiser, and more adventurous than ever.
