Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful parents out there that fill the role of Mom (or Mum) for those around them. Whether you are a mother, an aunt, a grandmother, a big sister, Dad or a close friend, we are celebrating your effort to look after those special people in your life. Disney has always been a champion of the concept of family, and they have created some wonderful loving motherly characters along the way. Here are some of my favorite Disney mother figures (traditional and conceptual) throughout history.
Gramma Tala – Moana
Even though Moana had a loving mother in her story, I was always taken by the connection she had with her grandmother and how that guided her through her journey. Gramma Tala really understood who Moana was, not just who she was expected to be.
Perdita – 101 Dalmations
This one should go without saying, Predita had 15 puppies and looked after every single one of them! That is pretty heroic by itself.
Mrs. Incredible – The Incredibles
Helen Parr left her extremely exciting and satisfying life as a superhero behind to protect her children. Then, when her past caught up with her, she stepped up to the plate and taught them everything she could to tackle the challenge as a family. The family that heroes together, stays together.
Nani – Lilo & Stitch
Nani stepped into a role that no sister should have to. She took on the responsibility of Lilo when she was still young enough to need a mother herself and taught her everything she needed to understand who she was.
Duchess – Aristocats
In the Aristocats, Duchess was so proud of her kittens, Marie, Berlioz, and Toulouse, for each individual trait they possessed. I love the scene below where they meet Amelia and Abigail.
Eudora – Princess and the Frog
In The Princess and the Frog, Tiana’s mother faced the awful reality of playing both parental roles to Tiana when her father passed away. Eudora encouraged Tiana’s dreams and believed in her vision for the future the way her father would have.
Maurice – Beauty and the Beast
In another sad twist, Beauty and the Beast’s Maurice played the role of father and mother to Belle, nurturing her inquisitive nature while trying to protect her.
Kanga – Winnie The Pooh
Though only a Mom to Little Roo, Kanga looked after Winnie the Pooh and all his friends, watching over them in all her adventures.
