The Big Meaning Behind Disney’s ‘it’s a small world’

“Though the mountains divide and the oceans are wide, it’s a small world after all.”

Few Disney attractions carry a message as simple, sincere, and enduring as it’s a small world. What began as a modest idea for a World’s Fair attraction grew into one of the most recognizable experiences in theme park history, and one of Walt Disney’s clearest statements about empathy and shared humanity.

How It All Began

The story starts in 1960, when influential urban planner Robert Moses personally approached Walt Disney with a request. Moses wanted Disney to design a “children’s village” for the upcoming 1964 to 1965 New York World’s Fair. At the same time, Walt and his team at WED Enterprises were already exploring ways to create attractions for the Fair. These projects would allow Imagineers to experiment with new technology before bringing concepts back to Disneyland, while also testing whether Disney-style attractions would resonate with East Coast audiences.

Soon after, the Pepsi-Cola Company stepped in as sponsor for the UNICEF pavilion and partnered with Disney to develop an attraction celebrating children around the world. With less than a year to design and build it, Walt proposed what he called a “little boat ride.” The idea puzzled his team, especially since they were also developing ambitious projects like Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and Carousel of Progress. Compared to those, a gentle boat ride seemed almost too simple… but Walt knew exactly what he wanted.

A Song That Could Unite the World

Walt envisioned a ride that showcased children from different cultures, reflecting UNICEF’s mission and the Fair’s theme of Peace Through Understanding. Music would be central to that vision. Early concepts involved each Audio Animatronic doll singing their own national anthem, but the result was overwhelming and disjointed. As composer Richard Sherman later described it, the sound became “a cacophony.”

Instead, Walt asked the Sherman Brothers to write a single song that could be translated into many languages and understood everywhere. During a discussion with Imagineers, Walt casually summed up the idea with a phrase that stuck: “It’s a small world after all.”

That simple thought became the foundation for the song. Originally written as a slow ballad, it was later sped up at Walt’s request to create the familiar, cheerful version we know today. The repetition was intentional, as Walt wanted something memorable; something that lingered long after guests stepped off their boat.

it’s a small world debuted at the World’s Fair during a period shaped by global tension, including the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Beneath the smiling figures and bright colors, the song carried a quiet plea. The lyrics speak of shared hopes and fears and remind listeners that despite differences, people across the world share far more than they realize.

It’s a world of hope / and a world of fears

There’s so much that we share / That it’s time we’re aware

It’s a small world after all

“[It’s] a simple, simple child’s prayer to respect each other and to love each other. That’s what we’re saying, without saying those words.”

– Richard Sherman

A Living Legacy

The attraction opened at Disneyland in 1966 and now exists in multiple Disney parks across the globe, including Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland.

The song is one of the most played songs globally, as it is playing somewhere in the world every day, at any given moment. It has become part of the fabric of Disney Parks history, even with its catchy repetition that many love to joke about.

Earlier this year, the message was reinforced with the addition of “The Final Verse” written by Richard Sherman before his passing in 2024, a reminder that there’s more than unites than divides us:

Mother earth unites us in heart and mind / And the love we give makes us humankind

Through our vast wondrous land / When we stand hand in hand

It’s a small world after all.

At its core, it’s a small world remains one of Walt Disney’s most heartfelt reminders. Kindness matters. Understanding matters. And even in a very big world, we are far more connected than we often realize.
