While docked in Labadee, Haiti during a seven-day voyage, teenage passenger Laurent Mercer from the French island collectivity Wallis and Futuna, attempted to climb over to his stateroom balcony from an adjacent balcony on the eighth floor of Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas cruise ship.
According to the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office, the boy was not carrying his stateroom key card when he lost his footing and fell onto the pier which they believe is why the boy was attempting to climb over the balcony in the first place.
“The ship’s medical team responded to the pier and attempted CPR, but the [boy] had sustained major head trauma and he was pronounced dead” according to the statement released.
The Oasis-class Harmony of the Seas is one of the largest ships in the world, with a capacity of 5,479 guests and 2,193 crew members. The ship is 1,188 feet long and weighs 226,960 gross tons.
