Another luxury hotel planned for Anaheim

The Anaheim City Council is beginning to see the rewards from a 2013 deal that gives developers back a large portion of the bed tax if they bring a hotel with a AAA four-diamond rating to Anaheim.

In addition to the already announced JW Marriott being proposed for the GardenWalk area, the owners of the Anabella Hotel have purchased the aging Anaheim Plaza Hotel and have announced plans to build a luxury hotel in its place.  Construction would start next year, after getting final approval from the Anaheim Planning Commission and City Council, with an expected opening date in 2018.

The Anaheim Plaza stands on 8.8 acres at the corner of Harbor Boulevard and Disney Way, with both the Disneyland Resort and Anaheim GardenWalk shopping area nearby.

The currently unnamed $160 million hotel would feature 580 rooms, plus 25,600 square feet of retail and 50,000 square feet of convention space.

Currently, only the Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel have the AAA four-diamond rating. The 2013 agreement gives developers 70 percent of bed taxes over the next 20 years for creating new four-diamond properties.
