In a not-so-surprising turn of events, Cars 3 has managed to outperform its competitors as it debuted this weekend. It has earned more than the three other newcomers this weekend and wrestled the top spot from Wonder Woman.
As of Sunday morning, Variety reported Cars 3 was looking at a box office of $53.5 million. Wonder Woman is still going strong with $40 million. The other three films making their debut this weekend were All Eyez on Me with $27.1 million, 47 Meters Down with $11.5 million, and Rough Night with $8.1 million.
Cars 3 hasn’t had as strong an opening as its predecessors though. The first Cars opened to $60.1 million, and Cars 2 exceeded that with $66.1 million. Cars 3 director Brian Fee worked as a storyboard artist on both of those films, as well as Ratatouille and Wall-E. The film stars Owen Wilson, Cristela Alonzo, Armie Hammer, Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Nathan Fillion, Kerry Washington, and Lea DeLaria.
Disney Distribution chief Dave Hollis stressed the inclusion of Alonzo’s role, Cruz Ramirez. “This, at the end of the day, is a very important franchise for the company,” Hollis said, “We’re seeing, once again, the power of putting a female protagonist front and center … There is now a new generation of ‘Cars’ fans.”
