Disney-ABC teams up with Snapchat to create original shows

The Disney-ABC Television Group will be producing several original shows for Snapchat. The first will be an 11-episode aftershow for ABC’s The Bachelor. The episodes will be 3-5 minutes long and will debut after the season premiere on January 3. They will be in the Snapchat Discover section and will be available for 24 hours after being posted. Watch Party: The Bachelor will “feature celebrities, comedian, super fans and infamous Bachelors and Bachelorettes.” There will be commentators discussing the previous night’s TV episode. There are several other shows in the works, but no details were released at this time. John Frelinghuysen, executive VP of digital media strategy and business development for Disney-ABC TV, said, “We’ve been exploring ways to tell stories on mobile, and Snapchat was a very exciting canvas for us to work on.” According to Variety, the Disney/Snapchat deal is a way to reach out to younger audiences who don’t watch as much regular TV. Nick Bell, Snap Inc.’s VP of content, said, “Disney-ABC have rewritten the rules for how to develop daring, fun and adventurous series for TV, mastering formats ranging from scripted to reality and from drama to comedy. They will be a vital partner as we continue to expand our lineup of shows on Discover.” News source/photo credit: Variety
