Disney and ABC are celebrating families and reading during the fifth annual “Magic of Storytelling” campaign and the second annual Disney Reads Day. In honor of the campaign, Disney and ABC will donate up to one million books to First Book. This nonprofit makes sure that organizations and educators who service low-income children have access to new books. Disney has donated 57 million books to First Book over the past 16 years.
The Magic of Storytelling “aims to inspire families’ imaginations, cultivate a lifelong love of reading in kids, and bring books to underserved communities across the country.”
Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book, said, “We are so proud to have donated more than 57 million books through our long-standing collaboration with Disney. Each year, the excitement around the Magic of Storytelling campaign grows, inspiring million of individuals to help us bring much-needed new books to children in need.”
Disney Reads Day is February 4 and families are encouraged to sit and read together.
There are a few ways the public can help “activate” Disney’s book donations:
One for One Book Donation: For every eligible Disney book purchased at a Disney store or participating retailer, Disney will donate one book to First Book
Share a Shelfie: One book will be donated for each “shelfie”, a selfie photo with a favorite book or in front of a bookshelf. Share the photos on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #MagicOfStorytelling
Disney Story Central: Every book read in the app will get one book donated from Disney
Magic of Storytelling Sweepstakes: Enter the Magic of Storytelling Sweepstakes and win a library of 400 Disney books for your school, plus a personal library for home. Disney will donate one book for each sweepstakes entry.
In-Store Events: Disney Reads Day on February 4 will be celebrated at Disney Store, Barnes & Noble, plus many other retail locations. There will be free family activities, such as story time, coloring and activity sheets, and themed “shelfie” stations.
Disney is also providing lesson plans, reading activities, and more for teachers and libraries across the country to participate in the Magic of Storytelling campaign.
Disney is launching this new campaign with the release of a PSA voiced by Emma Watson, who stars in the upcoming Beauty and the Beast film.
The Magic of Storytelling campaign runs through March 31.
