Hollywood’s summer movie worries melted into delight this weekend as Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 made a triumphant debut. According to Sunday’s studio estimates, the animated sequel raked in a whopping $155 million from 4,440 theaters across the U.S. and Canada.
It marks the second-highest opening weekend in Pixar’s 29-year history of filmmaking and the second-largest animated debut ever, trailing only behind the $182.7 million launch of Incredibles 2 in 2018. Additionally, it stands as the top opening of 2024 so far, surpassing Barbie. Alongside its international earnings estimated at $140 million, Inside Out 2 achieved a remarkable and record-breaking global start with $295 million.
Disney was already having a good summer with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which this weekend was in third place in its sixth weekend with $5.2 million (bringing its global total to $374.5 million). Next up is Deadpool & Wolverine (July 26).
