Disney is planning a live-action version of their 1998 animated film, Mulan, and are currently seeking a Chinese actress for the title character.
Many people on social media had been concerned that Disney would “whitewash” the film, choosing a white actress instead of one of Chinese descent. Since Mulan is based on a Chinese legend, 105,000 people signed a petition asking the studio to choose a Chinese actress.
Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) voiced the character of Mulan in the animated version; B.D. Wong (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) voiced Li Shang.
The live-action Mulan will arrive in theaters in November 2, 2018.
