Elena of Avalor, the new animated series on Disney Channel, will debut on Friday, July 22. The one-hour premiere will introduce Disney’s first Latina princess before the series begins. Elena’s storyline will take cues from the Latin and Hispanic cultures, including their traditions, customs, and food.
Elena is from the land of Avalor, where Princess Sofia the First’s magical amulet originated. Elena is “a brave and adventurous teenager who has saved her kingdom from an evil sorceress, and must now learn to rule as crown princess until she is old enough to be queen. Elena’s journey will lead her to understand that her new role requires thoughtfulness, resilience and compassion, the traits of all truly great leaders.”
The first episode, “First Day of Rule,” can be previewed on the Disney Channel app and Disney Channel VOD platforms as of July 1. The series will then be offered in 163 countries around the world and in 33 languages. The storyline for the first episode:
“Elena officially becomes crown princess and rescues her sister, Isabel, from Noblins, elf-like shapeshifting creatures based on a Chilean peuchen myth. The episode also introduces Zuzo, Elena’s spirit guide in the animal world, based on the belief of a Mayan tribe in southern Mexico. In the second episode, titled “Model Sister,” Elena is torn between a promise she made to help Isabel and fulfilling her royal duties.”
A TV movie will also be aired on Disney Channel this fall, telling the story of “Elena and the Secret of Avalor.” Viewers will learn how Elena was imprisoned for years in the magical amulet and was eventually freed by Princess Sofia.
