The live-action Moana is on its way, and with the recent news that the original Moana voice actress Auli‘i Cravalho will not be reprising her role as the title character, fans are excitedly awaiting news of the new cast. Dwayne Johnson confirmed his reprisal of Maui at the time of the film’s announcement, though much of the cast remains unknown at this time. In a promising step forward, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Thomas Kail will be directing the new Disney film.
Kail caught Broadway’s attention when he directed Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights in 2008, earning a Tony for best direction of a musical. He reunited with Miranda in 2015 for Hamilton, this time winning the best direction prize while the musical won 11 awards out of the whopping 16 for which it was nominated.
